Instagram, our most favorite picture sharing community and to which we are addicted highly, is progressing well day by day. Back in 2010, it started with nothing and today it has more than 600 million active users and more than 50% brands use Instagram to promote their business. The application is very advance and every now and then Instagram keep introducing exciting and new features.
When we share our things on the Internet, especially pictures in case of Instagram, we are very keen about the fact that to whom these pictures are shown and from whom we want to hide it. In other words, when we are on a social platform like Instagram we care a lot about our privacy. We are very specific about to whom our pictures are visible and we do not like it when our privacy is hurt.
Apart from photo sharing there are a lot of other things we enter in our Instagram account details and we also do not want them to be available to everyone. When you think and worry about it that what if our privacy is breached or hurt? Instagram officials did also think about it, and that is why they have advanced privacy settings. The configuration for one’s privacy are highly detailed, and it includes things like who can see our pictures, and who can get access to your personal data and up to what extent. If you see it yourself, you will find that it is actually really good and you do not need to worry about your privacy from others.
But what if you did not have any danger from your followers or people viewing your posts? What if someone gets access to your password and Instagram id and opens your account? In that case, your privacy will be breached for sure, and the person who has secretly acquired your password from somewhere gets access to all the information on you. This all sounds like kind of scary scenario and your data could be at high risk. But you do not need to worry about this now because Instagram has taken a step to avoid this as well.
Instagram has recently added an extra protective layer to Instagram for its users, which is known as the two-factor authentication system. This method requires a code whenever your account has been logged in from another device. This means if someone gets hold of your password, they still would not be able to get access to your account.
Two-factor authentication method has had a great success in protecting the privacy of people, and over the time many big social media websites and also other sites have used two-factor authentication system to provide the best security to their users. Since its introduction, many big sites like Google, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Teamviewer and etc. are using it for the purpose of protecting their user’s privacy. The system of two-factor authentication works on one-time password, and that is why it is so protective. It also has many advantages, and that is the reason you should use this two-factor authentication on your Instagram as well.
You can have the SMS option in this in which every time you need to login from another device a code will be sent to your phone and after giving that one time password, you will be able to use your Instagram account on that device. It also has a Passive Key method in which the password is sent to you after a regular interval of time. One time password can also be sent to the user’s email account as well. Apart from that, there are various other ways though which you can use two-factor authentication system on different websites. Every website provides its own methods for two-factor authentication.
The CEO of Instagram Kevin Systrom made it his goal that he will provide the safest environment on Instagram for its users. And on March 23, 2017, Instagram finally introduced the two-factor authentication for its users and after enabling it, whenever you log in to your Instagram account, you will have to get a verification one-time password on your phone.
Your privacy will be totally safe on Instagram now because if someone wants to log in to your account, he would not just need the password anymore. He will need the password, your id and as well as the verification code. For Instagram, the two-factor security system supports two types of code. One of them is that whenever you log into your account on another device a one -time computer generated password will be sent to you on your phone and you can open your account after giving that one time password. And the second one is that you can decide a code before and you can use it later while logging in from another device. But you will only be able to use that code for just once.
To enable Two-factor authentication on your Instagram, you need to follow these simple steps:
Step # 1
Open Instagram, go to your profile tab and then on the top right corner select the options button
Step# 2
Now after going into the options menu keep scrolling down until you see the two-factor authentication option. Now turn on the option require security code to turn on Two-factor authentication system.
When you turn it on the Instagram will show you a message on screen which will say. “Turn this on? Turning on two-factor authentication means we’ll send you a security code to enter every time you log in.”
Step# 3
After checking the option of security code you will be sent a verification code to the phone number you have provided to Instagram. And if you have not provided any phone number to Instagram a screen will appear which will ask you to add the phone number and you can add your number there.
Step# 4
Now after giving the confirmation code, you will get on your phone, you will be taken to next page and there you will have backup codes for security which can be used one time. Those codes can be useful in case the verification message does not arrive on time.
Now you have added two-factor authentication system to your Instagram account successfully and your privacy is safe now. Whenever you will use your account from another device now, you must have to verify first. You can also turn two-factor verification off if you want to by going into the same settings and turning off the security code option.
